description
Due to the low biodegradability, some of the persistent organic substances appeared in the waters, including treated and drinking waters. Moreover, many of these compounds are supposed or proven carcinogens, mutagens, or endocrine disruptors. The biological water treatment method is generally not effective to eliminate these compounds. The presence of emerging biological active, persistent trace pollutants in both drinking water and aquatic ecosystem represents a great challenge for conventional water treatment methods. Even though they have very low concentration this can be one of the most important problems of society in the next decades. Consequently, efforts must be made to develop water treatment techniques, as well as to build tertiary water treatment units, which can be based on the Advanced Oxidation Processes. The aim of this research topic is the optimization of various Advanced Oxidation Processes (such as ozonation, UV and VUV photolysis, and heterogeneous photocatalysis) and their combinations for the elimination of these trace pollutants including determination of intermediates and mechanism of transformation.
