Solar – biomass hybrid power generation

THESIS TOPIC PROPOSAL

Institute: Budapest University of Technology and Economics
mechanical engineering
Géza Pattantyús-Ábrahám Doctoral School of Mechanical Engineering

Thesis supervisor: Pál Szentannai
Location of studies (in Hungarian): Department of Energy Engineering
Abbreviation of location of studies: EGR

Description of the research topic:

a) Antecedents: The biomass is currently utilized worldwide for power generation and in one hand this kind of renewable source is the most wheatear independent but in most cases the food competition occurs, which could be a critical issue. On the other hand in the sun-belt countries the solar energy utilization is a kind of natural answer for the global energy challenges. The hybrid systems may overcome the limitations that these two power generations have.
b.) Aim of research: Finding the certain configuration and operation parameter setup of the solar – hybrid power generation that able produce electricity in a cost effective way and has minimized impacts on the environment.
c.) Tasks, main items, necessary time: Doing a literature survey and determining the scientific gaps (0.5 years). Study of biomass conversion techniques, focussing on Fluidized Bed Conversion (1 year). Study of the possible integration of the concentrating solar power generation and biomass conversion (0.5 year). Working out the suitable system models for solar and biomass parts (0.5 years). Working out an integrated system model for investigate and optimizing operation parameters (1 year). Publication of the new scientific results (continuously). Writing the Ph.D. thesis (1 year). Attending some relevant courses (in English) on combustion theory, fluid dynamics, and energy engineering. Most of the mentioned tasks can be carried out in parallel.
d.) Required equipment: Computer, access to the scientific literature, and all the necessary laboratory equipment are readily available at the department.
e.) Expected scientific results: Solar – hybrid power generation cycle configuration and optimal operating conditions
