A kutatási téma leírása:

Research objectives:

Society as a whole relies increasingly on various communication (e.g., the Internet) and cyber- physical networks (e.g., power grids). So far, the general focus has been on technical solutions, which make each individual network more reliable. However, these networks are often in a mutual dependency relationship as they form a unified critical infrastructure. On the technical side, failures in one network may propagate to another networks; therefore novel failure patterns arise. On the economic side, propagating failures can translate into interrupted critical services, thus causing financial and social loss for multiple actors. Furthermore, this network of networks is evolving through conflicting economic incentives, and involves many selfish actors through intricate techno-economic processes. Although the reliability engineering literature offers some technical insight with regard to failure patterns in critical infrastructure networks, these key economic aspects are largely ignored.

Open problems and research goals:

- Exploring and designing for the tradeoff between network resiliency against random failures vs. targeted attacks, involving complex networks
- Analysis and incentive design for the smart grid, where the interplay of the power grid and the communication network promises more effective and reliable power distribution; but it also introduces economic tussles.
- Incentive and contract design for multi-operator network services, including cloud computing, where the interdependency of service providers poses challenges for quantifiably reliable and economically sound operation through Service Level Agreements.

Requirements:
- advanced knowledge of English
- interest in mathematical/economic modeling
- creative thinking
