A kutatási téma leírása:

Several information theoretic approaches were proposed at the rise of communication networks which can transmit the infromation in an efficient way between the endpoints of the connection. However, all of these were performed at the source node. The idea of network coding - when the core nodes of the network can perform algebraic operations on their incoming data - was first introduced in the early 2000s and since then its theory gained a lot of attention. Although we had to wait almost a decade for the first application which relies on network coding, nowadays it has several applications in wireless and wireline networks as well. The main benefit of network coding in communication neworks is that the connections cooperate for an efficient resource utilization instead of competing for the resources. The goal of this research is to investigate this benefit in multi-layer environments.

For optimal IP-over-WDM topology mapping two directions have been investigated in the literature: mathematical programming and structural approach. However, both of these methods suffer from an excessive computation time owing to the fact that the logical links have to be mapped on disjoint routes in the physical topology. On the other hand, the capacity consumption of heuristical approaches could be really high. As a solution, network coding is a possible candidate to reduce the bandwidth requirement and even to eliminate the disjointness constraint of the logical links. To further extend this multi-layer approach, the benefits of network coding could be investigated in a P2P overlay network on top of the previous backbone infrastructure. Although the benefits of network coding is well investigated almost at each layer of the TCP/IP protocol stack, there are only a few studies which investigate the overall benefit of coding in different layers for the application. Finally, we investigate the advantages of network coding in the planning and dimensioning of multi-layer networks for Smart Grid communication networks.

Research tasks:
- Novel topology mapping algortihm design for IP-over-optical networks using network coding to relax the physical disjointness constraint of logical links while the bandwidth requirement is minimized.
- Investigate the theoretical benefits and synergies of network coding in multiple layers from the point of the application in a P2P-over-MPLS-over-optical multi-layer environment.
- Propose a novel communication architecture using network coding for Smart Grid communication networks, with appropriate dimensioning in both the wireless and wireline part.
