Description of the research topic:

Kutatási célkitűzések:
Optical access network deployments are exceeding the traditional access network scope. Convergence with mobile backhaul, or long-reach (100+km) architectures gives survivability an increasingly important role, either due to the required high reliability (critical applications), or the higher risk of breakdowns due to extended network range. Increasing reliability with redundant network resources however increases the already enormous investment related to deployment of new optical access infrastructure.
The PhD candidate has to address algorithmic topology design and optimization of survivable optical access networks. Reliability requirements of various access networks have to be formulated, and mathematical models proposed for analysis of reliability, in order to propose optimal topology design strategies, with respect to the tradeoff between reliability and investment.
The topology design and survivability analysis have to be based on geospatial data, therefore a methodology is required for applying GIS systems in telecommunications, not only for topology design, but also for mathematical models describing the service area, that support optimization and analysis.

Kutatási feladatok:
- Detailed reliability and survivability analysis of optical, heterogeneous and fiber-wireless access networks using mathematical models
- Proposal for optimal survivable topology design strategies of mobile backhaul and long-reach fiber optic access networks
- Algorithmic solution for strategic design of optimal network topologies using GIS and geographical maps

- strong knowledge in modern telecommunication networks
- good mathematical background, especially in graph theory and optimization algorithms
- good skills in computer programming
