Description of the research topic:

The Internet has changed in many ways since its creation. It is now a global platform for computation and communication. The focus has been mainly on the advances of Internet technology and the economics of has not received sufficient attention. The development and deployment of many large-scale networked systems and applications (e.g. peer-to-peer systems and grids) which involve multiple stakeholders with divergent or even competing interests bring new challenges to the design and operation of the future Internet. Among these challenges are the issues related to the economics of the Internet. To the extreme, unmitigated selfish behavior in these systems can lead to high inefficiency or even complete collapse. Furthermore, there are still ongoing debates on the structure of the future Internet, both from the architectural, operational and application-minded points of view.
The principal objective of the research is to investigate the key economics related issues of the future Intenet, and based on that knowledge, to desing new incentive-compatible mechanisms that support future Internet applications.

Open problems:
 Identify and analyze key economics/incentive related issues of future Internet applications and Internet-based systems
 Design new methods for engineering incentives and disincentives for future Internet applications (e.g., reputation, trust, control, accountability, anonymity, and pricing issues.)
 Prototype implementation of the prosposed mechanisms
