Description of the research topic:

Based on the previous archaeological and physical anthropological research, in East Transdanubia mainly former Germanic and late antique populations were present in the Early Avar age. However Avar groups arriving in the 6th century A.D. were represented in smaller numbers in this area. According to the recent presumption after a short period the Avar population started to dominate.
During the proposed doctoral research we intend to examine the survival of autochton populations and the degree of the potential mixing between Avars and the former groups based on a large series of historical human samples. The paleopathological studies can shed light on their diseases and the circumstances of their life as well.
