What kind of thing is a work of art? (Artworks as particulars: physical particulars or sets of physical particulars (Goodman), mereological sums (Caplan–Matheson), particular token events (Davies), abstract particulars (Dilworth), mental objects (Collingwood), “abstract artefacts” (Thomasson), “high-level” particulars (Rohrbaugh); artworks as universals: Platonic universals (Kivy, S. Davies, Wolterstorff), Aristotelian universals (Wollheim); event-types (Currie).) Is it possible to formulate a viable revisionary theory of art (Thomasson, Dodd)? Can we provide a general definition of art, containing all the sufficient and necessary conditions of artworks (Danto)?
