Federating Distributed Scientific Databases

Location of studies (in Hungarian): ELTE, Faculty of Informatics
Abbreviation of location of studies: ELTE

Description of the research topic:

Modern scientific databases have reached the 10-100 TB range by today but the typical unit of datasets will soon be the petabyte. Relational database management systems would be convenient to handle such amounts of data but one of their important drawback is the inability to connect multiple servers for parallel, distributed processing of queries. At the same time, many fields of science require solutions for problems of joining information from databases residing on servers separated by the local network, or from geographically distributed machines only accessible via the Internet. The task of the student interested in the research topic is to get acquainted with the literature of the theory of distributed relational databases and, based on the literature, develop distributed solutions to join geographically distributed scientific (primarily astronomical) databases.
