Description of the research topic:

The past fifteen years have seen an extensive development of communication network infrastructures, a vast spread of physical objects embedded with sensors, software, and network-connectivity, and the accompanying digitization of every aspect of human life and business, for example, operations, manufacturing, finance, marketing, health, and leisure, to name only a few. Simultaneously, Moore’s law has proven intact, which has resulted in much more powerful computers and new technologies for storing and processing huge amounts of data, even in real time. The convergence of these developments has given rise to the formation of data-centric business applications, which combine multiple data sources to create models in order to provide new insights about the examined activities and processes (e.g. business, manufacturing), detect anomalous behaviours and predict various parameters.
This PhD topic focuses on challenges of fields that – due to the lack of significant amount of measurement data – have not been solved yet. The work will primarily deal with the analysis of mass data in the area of telecommunication, IoT systems (e.g. smart factories) and e-health and the creation of statistical and machine learning predictive models. After the identification of domain-specific analytical problems the PhD student will build novel methods and models to describe the given processes. The PhD topic will firstly focus on two sub-problems: 1) Root cause analysis of production lines in smart factories, anomaly detection and real-time failure prediction. 2) Analysis of medical sensor data to model patient conditions, predict and measure the efficiency of the treatment.
