Description of the research topic:

The theory of approximate groups was initiated by Terence Tao . By a crucial theorem in this new area proved independently by Breuillard-Green-Tao and Pyber-Szabó the powers of generating subsets of finite simple groups of bounded rank grow fast. This Product Theorem has deep consequences on permutation groups , expanders, number theory, random walks and more. It will be extremely interesting to see how general this new phenomenon is. We plan to explore this through considering a number of open problems (small and big).

Required language skills: English
Further requirements:
A good understanding of basic finite group theory.

Number of students who can be accepted: 2

Deadline for application: 2016-05-31
