Generation, characterization and application of attosecond light pulses

THESIS TOPIC PROPOSAL

Institute: University of Szeged
physics
Doctoral School of Physics

Thesis supervisor: Katalin Geretovszkyné Varjú
Location of studies (in Hungarian): SZTE + ELI-ALPS
Abbreviation of location of studies: ELI

Description of the research topic:

"The generation, characterization and application of attosecond light
pulses in the EUV spectral range are the heart of the ELI-ALPS laser
facility. The candidate will be deeply involved in the construction,
characterization of and experimentation with one of the attosecond
beam lines (SYLOS driven gas high order harmonic user beam line).
Since the parameters of the driving laser are unprecedented, one task
will be the evaluation and optimization of the generation conditions
which will include a novel phase matching scheme utilizing an array of
jets and a comparative study to a gas cell, all in the loose focusing
geometry. Numerical calculations will accompany these studies. The
high pulse intensity and repetition rate will also permit the
advancement of novel characterization methods such as the second order
autocorrelation of EUV pulses. Using isolated attosecond pulses, the
candidate will finally apply the EUV-EUV pump-probe scheme to
investigate electron dynamics in atoms or small molecules, which were
previously accessible only through the distortive methods of EUV-IR
pump-probe experiments. A comparison with published data will permit
the assessment of advantages and disadvantages as well as the accuracy
of the two approaches."
