Description of the research topic:
The goal of this research program is to develop a systematic analysis of various conceptual mechanisms underlying English idioms and relate this to the syntactic variability or frozenness of idiomatic expressions. The conceptual mechanisms include metaphor, metonymy and blending, the relationship between which has been the subject of much discussion. Idiomatic constructions often display a combination of various conceptual phenomena, and idioms vary in their degree of figurativity and motivation. The most promising approach to the analysis of semantics is the cognitive linguistic theory. The study of idiom variation can now rely on empirical material in the form of naturally occurring examples to be found in large English language corpora.
