A karotinoidok kutatása Pécsett közel 90 éves múltra tekint vissza. Ebben a tekintetben a világon egyedülálló. A kutatómunka Zechmeister László és Cholnoky László iskolateremtő munkásságával az 1920-as évek elején kezdődött. A munkacsoport a kezdetektől napjainkig nemzetközi mércével mérve is állandóan és folyamatosan kiemelkedő eredményeket ért el elsősorban új karotinoidok izolálása és szerkezetazonosítása, továbbá a poliénlánc cisz-transz izomériájának vizsgálata területén.
